Southern Oregon Magazine's
"Best Local Artist" 2012 award
We were honored and surprised when we received the news that the readers of Southern Oregon Magazine had awarded Cheryl D. Garcia the distinction of being their "Best Local Artist" for 2012. She is honored in their Winter 2012 issue for her diverse artwork and monumental public art installations such as the "California Poppies" on South Stage Road outside Jacksonville. We are very touched and honored that Southern Oregonians picked Cheryl and her artworks as one of best features of our area. Thank you so much Southern Oregon! The magazine is available on newsstands and in select business locations through March. Their website has not yet been updated to reflect the 2012 winners but is full of great information about our region and is worth a visit in it own right. [more]

Mentoring project installed at
IOOF Eastwood Cemetery
When a local Eagle Scout wanted to restore the pauper's section markers as his Leadership Service Project, Cheryl didn't hesitate to volunteer her metalworking skills to the effort. That effort came to a conclusion this last week as Cheryl met Kenny and his father out at the IOOF Eastwood Cemetery for final installation. Kenny had worked many hours on painting and finishing the metalwork and it was an emotional moment as the metalwork was put in place. For the first time in the pauper's section history it was finally properly marked and recognized. We congratulate Kenny of Scout Troop #107 on completing his Eagle Scout project and were very proud to be part of erecting these memorials.
We sincerely thank everyone who has contributed time, materials and services to help identify and correctly locate the graves of those less fortunate and well known. Thank you to the City of Medford; the Poole family of Ashland, OR;Kim Smith Sandblasting; White City Metals for their individual contributions. Look for the markers (see inset above) to your immediate left as you enter the IOOF Eastwood Cemetery from Siskiyou Blvd in Medford. [more]

Cheryl's Message
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
The year of the Dragon has arrived bearing great prosperity. The dragon is emblematic of potent and auspicious power, particularly control over water, rainfall, hurricane, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck.
As I work with fire and steel in the studio, the power of the dragon spirit often enters my thoughts. This year is a ‘Water Dragon’ year and I appreciate the analogy of life being much like steel quenched by water in the tempering process. Too much tempering and the steel can become brittle, too little and the steel cannot withstand force. The vital energy of chi and the balance of yin and yang, is a practice I live by. I have seen how life can become difficult with too much tempering or unfulfilling with too little tempering and a lack of passion.
I greet the New Year thankful for the passion I feel and the life force that flows through me freely and openly. May you also find that passion and balance in life and join me and my latest creation, "Flight of the Dragon" in celebrating The Year of the Dragon on Feb 4th in Jacksonville, Oregon.
